Do I Need Structural Calculations for Bifold Doors or a Large Opening?

Quick answer

Creating a wide opening for sliding or bifold doors often changes the load path through an existing wall or new extension. Where structural elements are introduced or altered, the design normally needs to demonstrate that the resulting structure is adequate.

Why large openings are structural

A wall above a new opening may be carrying roof, floor or wall loads. Removing part of that wall can require a beam or frame to transfer those loads to supports at each end. The support reactions then need to be carried through posts, walls or foundations.

What calculations may be needed

Depending on the arrangement, calculations may cover beams, deflection, lateral restraint, posts, bearings, padstones, connections, stability and foundations. The exact solution depends on spans, loads, existing construction and the geometry of the proposed opening.

Building Regulations and structure

Part A of the Building Regulations concerns structural safety. Building-control reviewers commonly expect suitable structural information where a project alters loadbearing construction or introduces structural members.

Architecture and engineering should be coordinated

The architectural opening size, ceiling depth, glazing head, column positions and internal finishes all depend on the structural solution. Coordinating the structural design before finalising the Building Regulations drawings can prevent visible downstands, awkward posts or late redesign.

Separate structural engineering service

Archi Project Architectural can coordinate the architectural and Building Regulations information. Structural calculations are available separately through Archiproject Structural Engineers where required.

Important: This is general information, not project-specific legal or statutory advice. Check the current national rules, local planning policy, Article 4 directions, planning history and Building Regulations position for the actual property before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Does every bifold door need a steel beam?

Not necessarily. The required structure depends on the building, span, loads and proposed construction.

Can Building Regulations drawings be completed before the beam is designed?

A preliminary layout can be developed, but the final technical package should be coordinated with the actual structural solution where structural work is required.

Who provides the structural calculations?

Structural calculations are a separate engineering service and can be provided through Archiproject Structural Engineers where agreed.
